Studio 12 - Adaptation

At the heart of most successful suburban communities is the humble park. A place for formal and informal gatherings, a place for personal reflection, for outdoor dining, for play. Additionally, an abundance of research has shown the Biophilic Design can significantly enhance the relationships between people within a specific built environment, so long as it is done well. Hence, the project aims to address a lack of parkland in the immediate vicinity of our site, by bringing the parkland into the communal spaces of this commercial to residential adaptive reuse project.

Throughout the entire height of this residential project sits a generous atrium, allowing each apartment to gain access to a second internal façade. Designed with recent graduates in mind, the apartments themselves are a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom units, each with outward facing living spaces to maximise daylighting. Taking inspiration from Lacton and Vassal’s winter gardens, a lightweight façade complements the existing concrete panels around the parkland areas in order to maximse light. The modularity and verticality of these elements reflects the overall intent of the international design style well, whilst bringing it into a new residential context.

This project becomes not just a place for nearly 200 recent graduates to rest their heads, but becomes a key element in the next chapter of their lives.
